Forum Posting and Blog Posting: Worth The Time?

There are a lot of backlink building techniques in the arsenal of your typical SEO company. A lot of gurus will tell you that every technique has it’s place and time, and that none should be discarded out of hand. At one point, that may have been true, but is it still?

First, let’s make it clear what we’re talking about here. By forum posting, we’re talking about going onto a forum, joining conversations, becoming a valued member, and then laying out some subtle links to your landing pages. By blog posting, we’re not talking about your own blog — we’re talking about going onto other people’s blogs and commenting on them in a way that results in a backlink to your website.

Why Forum Posting Takes Too Much Time
Forum posting involves a lot of community involvement. It’s like social media, only without all of the pretty ‘+1’ buttons — and also without the extraordinary volume of people participating. When you start posting on a forum, you’re investing time and energy into something that might not pan out.

If you start laying your links out only to have the community reject you for marketing on their message board, you’re completely SOL. On the other hand, the forums that have a policy of allowing marketing tend to be frequented almost entirely by marketers — or people who are so inured to marketing techniques that you’ll never get a click from the boards in the first place.

Why Commenting on Blog Posts Takes Too Much Time
There are two similar problems with posting blog comments. First, you have to find a blog that has a decent PageRank, is relevant, and will allow you to comment in the first place — and then on top of that it has to have an administrator that won’t can your comment for being a backlink. Usually you can get around that last point by making your comment cogent and interesting, but that takes time in and of itself.

But the real problem with commenting on a blog is anchor text. Most blogs won’t let you put hyperlinks in the meat of your blog, which means that if you want the right anchor text for your link, you’re going to have to claim that your name is “ninja throwing stars” or whatever your site’s keyword is. That’s a giant red flag to the blog admin, and will almost certainly get your comment canned.

In short, these two forms of backlink building are dead and best left that way. Don’t waste your time.

  5. Hey everyone. I recently created a small business / work at home community forum at http://www.companydreams.com. It targets those who seek to create their own business, those who have a business willing to share their ideas, and those who seek to learn paid surveys, selling on ebay, paid per click, freelancing, and many other online profit opportunities. I have already submitted the forum to search engines, as well as tried a few affiliate links. We already have a few great members and a growing community, but I am unsure what else to do to promote it. I am currently using both google Adwords and yahoo SearchMarket.

Please share some advice and feel free to PM me on the forum with any feedback. The forum can be found at http://www.companydreams.com

    Thank you everyone

  6. I just signed up for a blog at word press and plan to post my first blog in the morning. I’ve gone through a lot since comimg out as transgender and thought that creating a blog to share some of experiences and things I’ve learned with other tg and people that want to understand and know more about tg issues. I’ve never done a blog before and am uncertain. Should I do this?

  7. I know that you can go and join http://www.warcraftmovies.com and they will allow you to post your own videos. However I do not want to pay someone to give them content.

I have also heard that http://www.world-of-warcraft-videos.com is supposed to start allowing people to submit videos. They are also supposed to be holding all kinds of contest. Including ones for those who make their own videos.

There are quite a few great WoW vids on world-of-warcraft-videos.com. They also made it like a community where you get your own profile, blog, etc.. Complete with forums.

However I really want to start posting them to places other than just YouTube, etc…

I am not going to pay for such a service. So do I just have to wait for http://www.world-of-warcraft-videos to get their poop in a scoop or is there something else out there for me?

  8. I want to start a blog on blogspot.com and need help… I’m new at it, and have no clue where I’m going or what I’m doing… or what is worth writing about.

I’m a young stay at home mother of 3 (soon to be 4) I’m looking for blogs to follow with other young families with 4 kids.

I love to do crafts, and so badly want to learn more about sewing… quilting and machine embroidery to be specific, and I want to learn how to use my embroidery sewing machine better.. are there blogs out there that I can hook up with that I could learn from??

I also have a Canon DSLR camera that I want to learn more about using! I have three gorgeous little girls, and I want to capture so many beautiful memories of them… but I don’t know squat about my camera, or how to achieve the shots I want! Looking for blogs that I can relate to, in the ways specified above…. how do I find them?

How do if find blog rings??

    Help! 🙂

  9. I am an active member of http://www.fredmiranda.com (especially in the sports forum) and am looking to supplement my networking, interactions, and learning with other similar photography forums that have a high signal to noise ratio (little fluff, very few flame wars, etc.). The site should have a decent amount of traffic from professionals, semi-pros, and serious amateurs.

I’m not looking for dpreview.com-like forums full of people who just bought their first digital camera. Other forums I’ve found (openphotographyforum, photocamel, etc.) seem to have very little traffic in the areas I’m interested in participating, mainly sports, portraiture, nature/wildlife, post-processing, lighting, and the “business-side” of photography. A Buy/Sell area is nice, but not required.

Basically, I’m looking to see if there’s another site out there as useful and beneficial as fm.com. Free sites are nice, but a moderate fee (under $100) for an active, useful forum is also acceptable.

  10. I have asked this before but the answers were not great… I know that people have blogs so I now it can be done… I started one (free) with Google but absolutely NO ONE has read it since I started it a couple of years ago so I know that it is not “OUT THERE”… I want to start one of the most controversial blogs ever… There has to be a way… a step by step way to do it.

  11. I’m looking for a free way to get my blog noticed, by anyone! I’m just looking for random people; no one in particular. But, I’m short on cash so it has to be free.

    Please only realistic answers!
    Thanks!

  12. Does anyone know of a service where blog authors who are interested in exchanging posts on each others sites can get connected?

  13. timq3dimensionscom

other than mylot, makingmoneykingdom, and askanswerearn.com that pay more than a couple of pennies I will be your referral

  14. This is my blog which I created yesterday—> http://webcodinglines.blogspot.in/
Can you please have a look and let me know is it worth it.
I’m not getting any views or comments, so I should better give up?
I need few suggestion please 🙂
Does my Blog looks interesting? I just need your suggestion.
I really don’t know if am doing a right thing .

  15. http://www.bautforum.org

I heard that Phil Plait likes to ban anyone who disagree’s with him there. He banned one guy for not spending enough time at the board. Saw it with my own eyes. Scary. Apparently members are expected to grovel and scrape the floor, answer EVERY comment at the board and totally match the administrators idea’s on every possible topic. I know most boards online are run by little hitlers but the BAUTFORUM is reputedly the worst. As elitist a forum as they come. I don’t want to waste time joining up only to get banned and be unable to read the comments from the more intelligent visitors. What should I do? Should I join a better forum?
Why was I banned? I showed him this…
    http://www.badastronomer.com

I was going to give it to him but before I even had a chance to say anything I was banned. So now I’m keeping it. I have a new address now and still read the board but he kicks people out all the time. If I join up he’ll ban me and I won’t be able to read the board.

  16. Ssshhhh Im becoming aroused

im looking for members for my blog site. it’s really worth a look. it asks real life questions so that everyone can share their opinions and give their views.

  17. Im using Forum and will get alot of people going in but before that, i want to know if its possible to get paid by people clicking on my website

  18. Where Can I find something where I can make it so people can register, post things, etc, kinda like a private blog, or digg.com kinda thing

    Thanks

  19. I have a very basic website I created for my company in hopes to get international sells commission from, but I am going to need it to get on Google when people type in the two words exact. If I sign up for say 5-10 forums that allows you to put up a link after your answer, or what you’ve said, will that help it get indexed if I post around 2 times on say 10 different websites a day? There is hardly any competition. The site is http://ginsaw.com/ . I’m not trying to get traffic to it, I just wanted to give you and idea of what I was talking about.

  20. I want to get a blog started where I can talk about sports and just rant and all that good stuff.. But where’s a good place/website to do that? A place where it’ll have the potential to get views (in time, of course) and a place that has legitimacy to its name….. Unlike tumblr or a second Twitter account. Any help or pointers would be great.

Also, for what it’s worth, I’m hoping to be a sportswriter/journalist and am looking for a way to get something to add to a resume, if that’d help. Plus, I’d just like having a place to rant about sports where educated people can see and comment and talk back.

  21. I asked a few questions about how i can advertise my business. I was told to create a blog. I did just that here http://milliondolllarbodycoach.blogspot.com so now what? Where can i post my blog address so I can get the most exposure? how can I reach out to 1000’s of people who are interested in working from home, or earning a little extra cash, for free please.

  22. I just opened a online shop, for the moment i dont have to much money for advertise so what i want to know is where i can make advertise so it really worth!any suggest is welcome!many thanks

  23. I have a blog on blogger.com and I wanted to know how you make it so that only a portion of the post is showing…you know, so you have to click on a link to see the whole post.

  24. I’m asking because I want to let them know that there stories may be used to maybe help write a book, but don’t want to end up getting sued or something.

  25. Back in January I started a blog, thanks to suggestions from my Dad and my older brother. So far it’s gone from 9 hits to 517! while at comic con I gave out exchanged business cards and got contact info from different people I met and took photos with. Anyway, I’ve been looking for ways to promote my blog, I do have a facebook page that my brother set me up with 2 weeks ago. Last weekend while I was at comic con. I had planned/hoped to meet the cast of both Smallville and V and take some photos with them which mostly likely would’ve been a huge boost for my blog. I feel pretty bummed that I didn’t get downstairs to the Warner Bros booth to meet them but I’m keeping my eyes peeled for another opportunity.

Long story short, while my blog has received several hits I’ve only had about a total of 3 people actually leave comments and just one person who has subscribed to it.

Any suggestions for how I can promote it besides posting links on other sites and giving out referrals?

  26. I’m not really keen on signing up for membership into all kinds of stuff.

And I’m not really sure what kind of tags I should use in my blog, it’s really random.

Here it is if you want to check out. Plz suggest how I can get more traffic. Or just gimme more traffic, ha ha 🙂

  27. Where do the celebrity gossip blogs (for example, tmz.com, perezhilton.com, thesuperficial.com, etc.) get their photos from. They photos are always up-to-date and relevant.

If I wanted to get similar photos for my blog at a low cost, where could I find them. Please don’t tell me Flickr because I have looked and the only photos under the Creative Commons license aren’t worth using.

  28. I came across a post in another forum where people were advertising “Get paid to blog” sites and I’m wondering if anyone here has tried this? If so, do you really get paid to blog? Thanks for answering.

  29. I am starting a new home-based business (www.littleprincessparty.com) and have heard that blogging can help get exposure to my website? What kind of blog do I start? Are there certain things I should focus on or tags to add that would help exposure and rating? What are good sites for blogging? I need help understanding on how to use this for marketing….

  30. Creating both blog and forum comments is one of my own strengths. That being said, I have several questions to ask:

#1, Client A hires me to visit 150 blogs that relate to his website theme. In total that is 150 blog websites, which = 150 total comments. Each blog comment is to consist of: clients URL and anchor text. If I use the same IP address to post these comments, would client A be penalized by the search engines?

#2, If no to question #1, is it best to spread the work over a time period?

#3, In relationship to IP’s- is Google basing this on not who links for you but rather who is linking?
Meaning: If I post a blog comment on 3 websites sharing the same IP- google would not penalize the client but would rather just give ranking to the best site listed?

  31. Going to Taipei in a week…wanna know if there are any unusual places yet interesting (or special in some sense) dat is worth a visit?

pls dun include common places like ximending, night markets, hua xi jie etc…

Im looking for places the tour guides wont bring u, yet it is special and unique. Maybe something like a restaurant filmed in some drama (eg PS BuBu in Meteor Garden), or some famous celebrity shop (jay chou’s OMNI by JFK and his restaurant). Im open to any kinda suggestions as long as it is unique in taipei, something u prob cant find else where.

  33. I have my blog for a long time and I update it all the time, but still I don’t have many views 🙁
I have even an account on YT and deviantart. It sometimes helps me to promote my blog (like ‘also vistit my blog’)

    thetrainerintraining.blogspot.com

Gallop- Your reply made me rant. A few of your quotes: “they are more about personal opinion rants than legitimate info” “I can’t understand how anyone has the time to sit at a computer and conduct all day rants” “It’s kind of pitiful, isn’t it?” “I can’t respect someone who has the time for this.”

Hon, do you realize that you just spent several minutes of your life ranting about how you (meaning this is about your personal opinion) can’t respect anyone who gives their opinions and/or rants? 😉
Your reply made me laugh* not rant. Sorry, it’s late and clearly I need to go to sleep.

  35. I’m learning asp.net and I thought of creating a blog where i can post basic guidelines which I’ve learnt till now in my training.

Okay, so I’ve got a self-hosted wordpress blog over here:

    http://www.nyabella.se

One thing that I wonder about is Google. I ping all my posts, to a lot of ping services. I also use ping-o-matic, so don’t worry about telling me to ping services. When I digg my latest blog posts at digg.com, it shows up at Google the next day. The thing I’m wondering about right now is the whole blog. I’ve got about 300 posts in it, but only 4 of them show up in Google. The 4 posts that I’ve “digged”.

Is there anyway I could get the rest of the blog posts indexed by Google? They contain very valuable information.

  41. I made a blog and I’d be thrilled if you checked it out at lillielillielillielillielillielillie.blogspot.com just copy/paste but ya i only have like 6 posts and my old blog had over 30 and im coming to a like a “brain fart” so help with any thoughts that are amusing and would be fun to read and write about and become a follower of my blog thx babye<333

  42. I have recently begun uploading photos for my blog (www.unlimitedbyjk.com) onto Flickr to then embed into my blog posts. Before, I simply uploaded photos straight onto Blogger, and Facebook links would preview a thumbnail of each blog post’s first image. But now, the only thumbnail that is available to me is my blog header. I have already paid for Flickr, so I would rather not go back to uploading straight onto Blogger. Any advice/solutions?
